ABOUT

Established in Dec 2023, CoSEP undertakes transdisciplinary,
research-driven projects
to address the socio-spatial and political nature of designing and governing the built environment to facilitate the fullness of life.  CoSEP's projects lie at the intersection of design, technology, governance, and social justice. We are committed to praxis, or the reflective manner of combining theory and practice to achieve and sustain just futures. CoSEP is housed at the University of California, Davis, on the land of the home of the Patwin people.

RESEARCH TRACK: Technoscience of Environmental Governance

THEME #1: Model Governance

i. Techno-Just: Environmental Justice and Governance in a Time of Technological Fixes
Book project in progress.

Techno-just addresses the specific and broad impacts of small and large-scale computing and electronic technologies that mediate environmental governance and environmental justice. It explains the affordances and limitations of these technological mediations and their downstream effects on the environmental justice movement. The book is based on long-term ethnographic research into the environmental justice movement’s involvement with two landmark California laws: Assembly Bill 617 (AB 617), aimed at reducing air pollution in EJ neighborhoods, and Assembly Bill 32 (AB 32), which seeks more coordinated efforts with EJ groups to achieve a decarbonized future. Both legislations emphasize environmental justice.
